Audio Engineering Society

The Audio Engineering Society student chapter at American River College is one of the most active student chapters in the western United States. It has recently expanded to include students from other nearby colleges in the Sacramento region.

About the AES.
The Audio Engineering Society, now in its fifth decade, is the only professional society devoted exclusively to audio technology. Its membership is composed of leading engineers, scientists and other audio authorities. The AES serves its members, the industry, and the public by stimulating and facilitating advances in the constantly changing field of audio. It encourages and disseminates new developments through technical meetings, demos of professional equipment, and through the AES Journal.

Activities.
Our student chapter regularly provides its members with a variety of activities and networking opportunities including tours of recording studios, broadcast facilities, mastering houses, and manufacturers of audio equipment. In addition, we host numerous workshops and hands-on demos featuring industry professionals.

Pro Tools Training

The ARC Commercial Music Program has been designated as an official AVID Authorized Training Partner. As a result, we are to offer our students training and certification classes in Avid's Pro Tools. There are two vital aspects to a successful Pro Tools training facility. The first is to offer students the chance to work on the latest equipment and software. Our Pro Tools classroom has 22 workstations so each student has their own station. Each of them has an 88-note keyboard controller, an Mbox 2 audio interface, and an iMac computer loaded with the latest version of Pro Tools and virtually every plugin available, as well as a variety of other music software including Ableton Live, Reason, Logic, and Finale.

The second vital aspect is to have a knowledgeable and effective teacher. When students take Pro Tools classes at American River College, they study with the person that wrote the book. . . literally! Frank D. Cook, the author of the textbook that Avid requires for their certification courses, teaches all of our Pro Tools classes. Students are treated to his clear and in-depth insights into the workings (and shortcuts) of the software package.
