Programs
Early
Childhood Education
Preparation for employment in early child education
programs, which include public and private preschools and childcare centers.
The program meets the course requirements for teachers in preschools and
in childcare and development centers licensed by the California Department
of Social Services, and provides coursework required for the Children's
Center Instructional Permit, the credential required in California for
teaching in public preschools and children's centers. Upon completion
of the A.A. with a major in early childhood education and one year of
teaching experience, students are eligible to apply for a Regular Children's
Center Instructional Permit, issued by the Commission for Teaching Credentialing.
Certificates are also offered in Preschool Teaching, Program Management,
Infant Care, Family Child Care, School Age, and Nanny.

Family
& Consumer Science
Consumerism and the relationships and process involved
in the establishment of a strong home and community environment for individuals
and families. By careful selection of required and elective units a student
can develop a broad home economics major or specialize in child development,
clothing construction, or foods and nutrition.
Foster
& Kinship Care Education
This is a non-academic program that offers free
parenting training for foster parents and non-foster parents.
Funeral
Service Education
The Funeral Service Education Program
at American River College is a two-year Associate
of Science degree program, beginning in the fall semester, 2002. The program will prepare students for entry-level employment
in the funeral service industry; provide a strong theory-based curriculum
and related clinical experience reflective of the current industry standard;
maintain or exceed the standards put forth by the accrediting board (ABFSE).
Nursing
The Nursing program consists of a combination of
general education and nursing courses with related laboratory experience
in local health agencies. Successful completion of the program qualifies
the student to take the California State Licensing Examination to become
registered as a nurse and eligible for employment. There are special requirements
for this program.
Nutrition
The Dietary Manager/Dietary Service Supervisor option
has been approved by the Dietary Managers Association and meets the requirements
for the California State Department of Health Services. Certificate holders
are eligible to join the Dietary Managers Association. A School Food Service
Supervisor option is also available from the college.
Paramedic /
Emergency
Medical Technician (EMT)
Paramedics respond to emergencies outside the hospital
and render basic and advanced medical treatment before and during transport
to a hospital. Classroom, clinical and field internship training prepares
students to assess and treat a wide variety of medical emergencies. The
knowledge, skills and experience gained through the program allow students
to meet the responsibilities outlined in the Department of Transportation
National Standard Curriculum.
Respiratory
Care
Respiratory Care is an allied health profession
dealing with treating patients with cardiopulmonary diseases and other
illnesses, including emergency are of critically injured persons, and
the care of premature infants and children. The program is accredited
by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs. Successful
completion of the program qualifies the graduate to apply for the credentialing
examinations offered through the State of California and the National
Board for Respiratory Care.
