My work explores photography and digital imaging. All of my imagery involves a chemistry of props, fabricated environments, and miniature models. Working this way allows me to incorporate my other artistic skills, like drawing, sculpting, and painting into my photography.
Mythology inspires my latest work where plants have a physical influence over humans. In this world, nature’s powerful presence makes it difficult to see where organic plant forms end and human forms begin. Illustrating these kinds of ideas in my work reminds viewers that we still have a profound connection with nature. With increasing technology and urban development people are more removed from the natural world.
I’m particularly interested in the way visual language employs and receives cultural messages. I inherited a love for folkloric storytelling from my father who comes from a long line of Latino storytellers. Folklore and mythology have the potential to transcend cultural boundaries and teach valuable, timeless lessons. My familial background is one reason I use photography to weave stories rather than as a documentary tool.
