Betty Nelsen is a fine artist working with both traditional and digital media including graphite, acrylic paint, ceramic sculpture, Adobe Illustrator and Corel Painter.

While media is important in the art making process, she considers content to be the central issue. Betty works from direct observation and concerned with the transient nature of things; the cycle from bug to dying bloom and seed pod of an amaryllis, the liveliness of the decomposition process in a dead bird, coming to understand that each time the self is reflected in a mirror, it is different.

In the classroom, Betty emphasizes the relationship between self-expression and refinement of fundamental visual skills. Students are encouraged to develop their own stylistic response to problem solving and image making.
